Can God's Way Be The Greek Way?

Yesterday, I got a text from one of my good guy friends asking me if I would be willing to talk to a college freshman girl who has just joined a sorority and feels that she is at a crossroads on how to follow God whole heartedly in the college atmosphere.

I'm flattered that he thought I would be a good person for her to talk to, but it is still kind of nerve racking.  I don't even have everything all figured out, nor would I claim to have it all together. This may come as a shocker, but I'm not perfect haha. I have definitely made my fair share of mistakes in college and know that I will continue to make mistakes outside of college.

But all this got me thinking, do you think joining a sorority can help or hinder your walk with God? I think it most certainly can go both ways from my own personal experience, but it also does depend on the type of people you surround yourself with whether you decide to go Greek or not. I know that joining a sorority was part of God's master plan for me and that He was able to use me and shape me into the person I am today there, but I also know that this may not be the right choice for everyone.

I know there are a lot of sorority girls in the blogging world so I'm interested to hear what y'all think, but also those of you who are not. Is that one reason you didn't join a sorority?

Can y'all please pray for me that I will have the wisdom to know what to say to this girl.

Hope y'all have a happy Monday! :)

  1. I agree with you Emily. It can definitely go different ways depending not only on the people you hang out with but your values.

College in general tests your faith and values. Greek life can make your decisions even harder if everyone else is "doing it", whatever it may be.

I also know that many times sisters in a sorority won't judge you negatively if you say from day 1 you don't drink, smoke, whatever. They will respect their sisters. If they don't then there is something wrong with their values.

I will pray for her! I hope she realized what positive impacts being Greek will have on her college experience. She should also find out if her sorority has a Bible study like you used to do for us.

  2. I agree with you--it depends on the person and their own beliefs prior to joining. In my chapter, we have a prayer/dedication at every meeting and our President also holds a weekly bible study. Of course, it's not mandatory but about 70% of the chapter attends on a weekly basis. I'm Catholic & so is my big sis and a couple other sisters, so we always have someone to go to church with. That's definitely helped me stay close and keep going to church on a weekly basis because I don't have to go alone. Of course, being Greek does come with certain temptations but in the end, it comes down to how strong an individuals relationship is with Him because you cannot solely blame the organization for their own lapse in faith.

  3. I definitely agree with you! I think joining a sorority shapes your experience, but that it very much matters who you surround yourself with (both inside and outside your chapter.) I know that my life would be drastically different if I had not met the girls in my sorority! they have all helped me grow in my faith and have helped and become the person I am today.
    I'll be praying for her!

  5. As a sorority gal myself (well back in the day! ;)) I definitely encourage any woman to join, if they feel it is a good fit. I learned soooo much from being on the exec board and holding leadership roles, that I didn't learn from the classroom. I feel these skills helped me land my first job after college and gave me the confidence to take on bigger roles, because of my sorority experience. I would say that with anything as long as one makes God the primary focus and seeks Him first, the rest will fall into place! I will def pray for wisdom for you dear! I think this is an AWESOME opportunity to mentor someone and is sooo cool that He has organized this to happen! Have a fantastic Monday!!

  6. As someone who is not in a sorority, I still agree that it can go either way. I have friends in sororities that seem to have lost all the morals and values they had before college. Maybe it's because they went Greek, but maybe not. I am not in a position to judge that. I have other friends who joined and have held on tight and even grew in their relationship with God.
I think it all depends on which sorority you join. Knowing the reputation of each sorority on campus is important if you are going to rush. You need sisters that will encourage you to go to bible study with them, and not to go party with them.
In the end, it's a very personal thing. Your relationship with God is up to you, and you have to work at making it your first priority no matter what challenges your facing. I see tons of benefits of being in a sorority, it just isn't for me.
I'll be praying for you as you talk to her and for her to make the right decision for her! God will give you the words to say :)

  7. I went Greek at the beginning of the school year and in my opinion my relationship with the Lord has never been better. Because of friends that I met through my sorority and the Panhellenic community, I was able to go on my first mission trip and it was incredible. I will absolutely be praying that He gives you the words to say to this girl and that she has the faith to follow His path, whatever that may be!

This was definitely a great post for me to be introduced to your blog! So cute!

  8. I definitely believe that going Greek should not hinder your walk with God! While it may makes things more challenging, I believe it helps make your relationship with God stronger. You are a great role model for this young lady :) never doubt yourself! Hope you have great weekend and Easter!

  10. Loved this post! I rushed my Freshman year and it was definitely not God's plan for myself. I do know wonderful women in sororities that have been able to be a Shining Light so to say in their chapters, it definitely goes both ways!
